Winter Shelter

The purpose of this winter shelter is to be capable to support 1-2 people in winter weather conditions. It keeps them dry, warm and protected from the weather. This winter shelter was made by using all natural materials and a 10 x 10 tarp.

The materials used were:

  • 2 trees
  • twine rope (vines)
  • numerous large branches (6ft)
  • 10 x 10 tarp
  • Christmas tree branches scraps
  • a chain saw for help
To construct this shelter I sought out 2 sturdy trees that were close together. These trees helped me construct a foundation for the structure. I started of by tying a 6ft long branch across the 2 trees about 6ft high. I used rope/ vine to hold it in place. Next, I found 2 more study branches and dug 5inches into the ground and placed one in each hole. This created the 4 points for walls. After, I tied another 6ft long branch from the tree to the post, on each side to each tree and in the front of the structure. I started collecting more 6ft long branches and stacked them all around the sides of the shelter to create walls. I left about a 2ft opening for a "door". After all the branches were stacked along the shelter, I took more string/ vines and wrapped the branches together so that it was one unit and none of them could fall down. Once I reached each corner on the walls I tied the remaining string to the posts to ensure the walls were secure. After the walls were secured I used a chain saw to level off the top to the roof so I could place the tarp over it. The tarp created a sealant to water wind and snow. I added extra branches on the side to secure the extra pieces of the tarp that went over the roof's surface. I then added a few small branches on the top so that the tarp will not blow away. After the roofing was complete, I cut up a few stray Christmas trees and placed them in between the cracks in the walls at the bottom to help insulate it and provide a more comfortable ground for the occupants to sit on.

After the construction of this shelter I believe it is study enough to last throughout the winter season. I also believe it is big enough to fit more than 1-2 maybe even 4-5 people. I also believe with the tarp as a roof the occupants in the shelter will be protected from rain/ snow and wind.

Here is a video giving you a tour of the shelter:
